Hello Blogger user!

We know it’s been a little while since you’ve heard directly from us, so here we are again to spread the latest product news and updates from the Blogger Team.

Things have been very busy over here recently, as we’ve been working really hard to develop a number of new features while also building out new teams in global offices. Over the last few months we’ve put a lot of energy towards turning your suggestions into improvements to Blogger, and just in case you missed something along the way, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite updates for you to check out.

And while you’re busy reading through this list, we’ll be putting the final touches on the next round of exciting stuff. Make sure to stay tuned for 2011; we have big plans in store.

Features

Comment Filtering

Hopefully you’ve noticed the new Comments tab in your dashboard, which we added over the summer as part of our upgrade to the comment system. This Comment Inbox is a centralized place where you can manage all of your comment-related tasks, like delete published comments, manage comments that have been flagged as spam, and moderate awaiting comments (if you’ve enabled Comment Moderation).

We’ve also started analyzing all posted comments in our system, and are automatically classifying the ones we believe to be spam. Similar to Gmail’s spam filtering, you can help us improve our classifiers by telling us whether the comments we’ve caught are actually spam.



Stats

The Stats tab is another recent addition to the dashboard, and is the hub for all your blog’s realtime traffic data. Pageviews, reader location, browser types, popular posts, and referral sources are just a few of the pieces of information we’re constantly collecting for each blog.

If you want to show off your blog’s traffic data to your readers, we’ve also built Blog Stats and Popular Posts gadgets which you can add to your template. These can be added from the Gadget Directory at any time, and have a variety of configurable options to change the display and data layout.



Background Image Upload

Earlier in the summer we released our Template Designer to all users, and asked for your feedback about what other features we could add to make it even better. By far the top request was the ability to upload your own background image, and we’re happy to say that this feature is now live within the Template Designer.

To upload your own background image to your blog, simply click on the Background section within the Template Designer.



Mobile BlogSpot

We realize that more and more users are accessing the web on smartphones, and we want to make sure that blogs still look nice when viewed on these smaller screens. We’ve put a lot of work into creating a mobile version of BlogSpot, which will automatically detect if a blog is accessed on a smartphone and then display a mobile-optimized version.

Mobile BlogSpot is live now on Blogger in Draft, and can be enabled from the Settings | Email & Mobile tab. From there you can also check out a mobile preview version of your blog to see what it will look like.



Web Fonts

The Google Web Fonts team has made great progress on expanding font options across the web, especially for non-Latin alphabets like Cyrillic and Greek. We’ve taken advantage of their work and now offer 40 new Web Fonts in the Template Designer on Blogger in Draft. For the full list, check out our Help Center article.

Introducing the CLU: 32% Higher CTR

Hi Masrul,

We want to announce our newest, best-performing ad unit - the Chitika List Unit (CLU).  We are excited to be able to give you another way to increase your Chitika earnings from a new unit that has proven to directly increase your CTR.

What is the Chitika List Unit (CLU)?

The CLU looks just like our regular Chitika text ad units, except with the ability to expand & display up to 9 ads in the unit.

Why should I use the CLU?

1.  CTR Increase = More Money for You!  Initial tests have proven that the more ads within an ad unit, the higher the revenue for you from the unit.  (See graph below).

2.  Great User-Experience.  The CLU will expand and contract to however many ads are supported for a query within our ad inventory.  In other words, if we cannot supply 9 ads for a particular query, the ad will automatically adjust its height, ensuring no ugly white-space.

Chitika New Mobile Ads Mean More Revenue For You


 

 

Hi,

We are excited to let you know that we will begin rolling out our new Mobile Ads program across your website(s) today!  Now, in addition to your regular Chitika ad revenue, you will earn even more from these new ads targeted to visitors viewing your website on a mobile device*.

Here are some answers to your questions regarding our new mobile ads:

Why Do I Want Mobile Ads?
Chitika's mobile ads are designed specifically for mobile users, and should result in more clicks and more revenue from your mobile traffic stream.  The ads are designed to be noticeable on mobile devices without hurting the experience of your site.

When will these ads start to display for my account?
We are rolling these ads out slowly starting with a small portion of traffic, and then we will slowly increase this until mobile ads are live across the entire Chitika network.

What will they look like?
Here is a sample image:

How often will they be displayed?
Mobile ads will be displayed similar to how our Select ads are displayed: only when there is a high chance the ad will result in revenue for you.  So in other words, they will not be displayed 100% of the time.


How much revenue will I earn?
Mobile earnings will depend on your mobile traffic and will work very similar to the way you earn revenue from our regular desktop ads.  There will be separate, custom reporting for mobile ads available very soon.  

Do I have to make any changes for Mobile ads to be live for my site?
No.  Since you already have our ad code running, Mobile ads will display automatically without any action needed on your part.

What if I don't want mobile ads displayed on my website(s)?
You can easily disable mobile ads by logging in, and going to 'My Account'.  You can also
re-enable then later if you change your mind or you'd like to test them out.

Brief Chitika Display Issue

Hello Masrul ,

Today, Chitika suffered a brief display issue from 3:31 pm - 4:02 pm Eastern Time.  During this time, a bug caused a very large over-sized ad to be shown instead of our normal-sized ads.  This was supposed to be a small test of a new ad unit on a few sites, but ended up accidentally rolling out across the network as a whole.

Our engineers caught this issue very shortly after release and fixed the problem as quickly as possible.  We apologize for the inconvenience during this window of operation.
